Gaspard Ulliel + Mr. Foer

Sat Jan 3, 2009, 6:52 AM
You know what I realized the other day?

I have not seen one attractive photo of Gaspard Ulliel since his Hannibal premiere.

Like, honestly. That was back in, what, March 2007? In his emo-haired, pale, lanky glory. Captured sadistic hearts over the globe, mine included (okay, well, I didn't actually make it through all of Hannibal before the prospective gore got to me and I leapt under a blankie). Then it seemed he disappeared for x number of months, and when he came back, he was this tanned mess and had his hair gelled back. I thought that was a one-time blooper, the gel. And the tan. So I was like...okay....he will go back to his pale emo androgynous-ness soon. So I waited. Next public event, he shows up slightly more bloated than before, same gelled hair, same ruddy complexion. Now I began to worry in earnest.

Since the fall of 2007, he has continuously gelled his hair back and still grows progressively tanner. Every single public event, gelled. Gelled. Orange skin. Huge bear grease gel.

So....wtf?

I mean, honestly, his appearance is not my call. If he wants to look like a pseudo French guido-wannabe I-wish-I-were-a-suave-mobster, well, sure. He's entitled. I just am so disappointed that I shall have to content myself from here on with his photos from 2007 and prior. What a limited range of time.

My eyes burn.

Anyway. I read Jonathan Safran Foer's novel Everything Is Illuminated. I'm not sure what inspired me...Oh, yes, Madonna. After seeing Filth and Wisdom I got into Gogol Bordello which got me into Eugene Hutz which got me into Everything Is Illuminated the film which got me into Everything is Illuminated the book...and I still haven't finished watching the film (goddamned Youku stopped streaming in the middle. My nearest Blockbuster doesn't have it. The nearest library that has it is in a different county).

And...I think it's beautiful.

It came in this sprightly yellow paperback. Brightest book on my shelf. When I got it I spent at least five minutes just admiring the sunny yellow of the cover.

But no, what's beautiful is not just the cover, if that's what you thought I meant. I mean the writing. I heard some people call it pretentious and difficult to follow, but honestly, kids...A novel as, I don't know, I don't want to call it brilliant, but it almost is, well it deserves to be pretentious. If you've got it, flaunt it. And if you can't follow it, well, same as TDK, that's your fucking fault. Try harder to be smarter. Please and thanks.

I also ended up watching Wristcutters: A Love Story (yes, another product of my Eugene phase), and can I say that Shannyn Sossamon is absolutely gorgeous? I don't even know what it is, because she's not that pretty in photos or whatever, but I think it's her mouth. And her voice. And her neck/clavicle. She has this soft, full lips, but not big, just full. And these pretty white teeth. Her smile's not one of those harsh, hard ones, like...Keira Knightley, Natalie Portman, Evan Rachel Wood...Their smiles aren't really harsh or hard, but it's like they have to split their faces in half to do it (I'm one in that category, unfortunately), whereas people like Shannyn, their lips just sort of glide into place. It's very soothing to see.

Right, honestly, don't ask me to use my stuff in blends and photomanipulations and web laytouts and crap. Just don't. Please and thank you.

Oh my, I think we're the same person.
Every time you make a post I have to come up and tell you how much I love whatever it is you're talking about and agree with your opinion... it probably gets old and boring but here it goes again....
I love Jonathan Safran Foer! Everything Is Illuminated is a work of genius, even if critics call it pretentious and overhyped... I can admit that it isn't perfect but it is something very special and beautiful coming from a young author, and that is something to pay attention to. His second book, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, is the only piece of literature touching on 9-11 that hasn't made me go "ugggggh".... it's also worth reading, though he unfortunately clings too closely to the storytelling format that worked in Everything Is Illuminated.
The thing I love about Foer is his poetic style and the way his words seem to have the capacity to break a heart and then build it back up one syllable at time; like a modern and slightly embittered, slightly more raw Nabokov. He truly has talent and I look forward to watching him expand as an author. And as a fan of his, I high-five you for spreading the word!

Also, Gaspard looked pretty swell in Paris, Je T'aime, I thought :)

Yeah, I'm sad Gaspard doesn't have his meek, pale emo boy look anymore. The tan and hair are driving me crazy. The author of Hannibal needs to write another book so there can be a new movie and he could play in it and look that way. And he has gotten "bigger" hasn't he? I always wondered what looked so different about him...

I'll honestly say, I've never heard of Foer, but I'll check out his work. Seems interesting.

Maybe there needs to be an intervention. We'll kidnap him and throw him into Siberia where he will have no sunlight and measly rationed meals. He will become slender and pale and his hair will grow out over his brow. Then he'll come back to France good as new. c:
